MISSING AIRLINE REFUND GUIDE
Airline refund not received? Deadlines and next steps in 2026
If an airline says a refund was issued but the money is missing, first establish whether the refund is legally due, when the clock started and who took the payment. A precise chronology is more useful than repeated messages saying only that you are still waiting.

The short answer
Save the refund choice or confirmation, identify the merchant of record, calculate the applicable deadline, check the original payment method, then send one evidenced demand quoting the booking, amount and due date. If the deadline has passed, use the airline's formal complaint route and the regulator, ADR or card-dispute route that fits the itinerary and payment.
The deadline is not the same everywhere
European Union
For covered cancellations, EU rules provide reimbursement within seven days. Confirm that you chose reimbursement rather than rerouting and identify the carrier responsible for the covered flight.
United Kingdom
UK261 also distinguishes reimbursement from alternative travel. Complain to the airline first; the CAA explains that ADR or PACT may become relevant when the response is unsatisfactory or absent after eight weeks.
United States
For a qualifying automatic refund, the U.S. DOT states seven business days for credit-card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods. The rule depends on cancellation or a significant change and rejection of the alternative.
Canada
Canadian rules can require a refund within 30 days in qualifying cancellation or long-delay cases when the prescribed rebooking does not meet the passenger's needs. The cause and airline size can affect the route.
Check these points before escalating
- Did the airline cancel or significantly change the flight, or did you cancel voluntarily?
- Did you accept a voucher, travel credit, rebooking or another benefit?
- Was the ticket bought from the airline, an agent, an online travel agency or a package organiser?
- Who appears as merchant on the card or bank statement?
- Was the refund promised to the original payment method, a wallet or a voucher?
- Has the official deadline passed, excluding any different bank posting time clearly disclosed?
Evidence that makes the claim answerable
- Booking confirmation, ticket number and operating airline
- Cancellation or significant-change notice
- Refund selection, confirmation and promised amount
- Original payment record and merchant name
- Statement showing that the credit is still absent
- Voucher or rebooking offer and whether it was accepted
- Every case number, chat, email and promised date
- A one-page chronology with exact dates
A practical escalation sequence
1. Reconcile
Check the original card, bank account or wallet and search for credits under the airline, agent or payment processor name.
2. Demand
Send the airline or merchant one written request containing booking reference, refund basis, amount, original payment method, deadline and attachments.
3. Escalate
After the applicable process is exhausted, use the competent ADR, regulator or air-passenger complaint channel. Do not send the same generic text to every authority.
4. Review payment options
If card-dispute protection may apply, check the issuer's deadline immediately. A chargeback is a separate payment process and is not guaranteed.

Missing airline refund FAQ
Can a bank delay explain the missing refund?
Sometimes. Ask for the refund transaction reference and the date it was submitted, then ask the payment provider to trace it. A processing claim without a traceable reference is not proof that the credit reached you.
Should I ask for compensation too?
Keep it separate. A ticket refund, care expenses and fixed compensation are different requests and may follow different rules.
Can I start a chargeback?
Possibly, subject to the card scheme, issuer, facts and filing deadline. Contact the issuer promptly and disclose any refund already promised or received.
What if I booked through an online travel agent?
Identify who charged you, who controls the booking and what each party confirmed. Send an evidenced request to the responsible merchant and keep both parties' replies.
Does VEYDOIT recover the money?
VEYDOIT prepares a structured claim from your facts and evidence. It does not guarantee payment or replace an authority, lawyer, court or card issuer.
